Using Diamond Tips
A
light
hand makes it easier to control the
tip on the glass and prevents
premature wearing of the
diamond. If it "squeals"
you are pressing too hard causing the tool
motor to turn against a stationary tip. It is the repeated application of
the diamond tip to an area that
produce shading and depth in the
design. For glass, clear
areas appear darker while the etched areas
are lighter. On tile, ceramic, and stone the underlying color will be brought up. Use a
practice piece to try the following before beginning a final project.
- Draw a square and shade it in to a solid white using a ball and/or cylinder tip.
- Draw a long rectangle and shade from clear to opaque white using different tips
- Practice making half-tones and shading using different tips.
- Create stippling by tapping various tips vertically onto the glass.
- Create feathered strokes by applying the tip to the surface lightly and then fling the tip away and off the glass.
- Draw the same line in series using different tips to the see variations created.
- You can etch a design onto a piece of glass or bevel and then use the engraver and diamond tips to add depth and additional details.
- Instead of engraving the top side of a bevel or piece of glass, reverse the design and engrave from the back. You get an entirely different look.
- Try engraving on tiles, ceramics, and colored glasses, black is particularly striking.
- Engrave glasses, plates, or other glass serving items as gifts or to personalize.
- Use the tips to sign your work or engrave identification into valuables.
