Rulex™ Adjustable Square

Please read the entire guide in order to take full advantage of all uses and features.  Installing the Grip Strips These self adhesive pads keep your Rulex™ anchored on smooth surfaces like glass or tile. Apply the strips at the locator guides on both arms, front and back.        Self Storing Allen Wrench Snaps into arm when not needed. Setting the Protractor Use the Allen wrench to loosen the black hex screw on the protractor. Move the arms until the degree mark needed is opposite the indicator arrow. Use the Allen wrench to tighten the hex screw and lock your Rulex™ in place.	Rulex™ is a multiuse, multi-materials tool, ideal for stained glass work, tile work, wood working, layout and design. Although we will show Rulex™ being used on glass, the same techniques apply to using it with tile, wood, paper, pen, craft knives, etc. Squaring Edges / Cutting Strips Set Rulex™ to ‘SQUARE’ (90°). Place the edge guide firmly against the edge of the glass where you want to create a square edge and score. For strip cutting use the same setting and the built in ruler to quickly cut any number of strips at once:
	Measure the width of the sheet, ours is 12" Subtract the strip width from this. We are cutting 2" strips, 12" - 2" = 10" Adjust for cutter wheel offset. Ours is 1/16" so 10" - 1/16" = 9 15/16". This is our starting value. Align this value on the ruler to the left edge of the glass and score. Subtract your strip width from the start value and move Rulex™ to the left until this value is aligned with the left edge. Score Repeat the process until you have scored all strips needed. Break out your scores. Solid Geometric Shapes We have conveniently marked the angles used to create many common geometric shapes with the shape name next to the degree marking. Here we demonstrate how to make a hexagon base, but the process is the same for making triangles, squares, pentagons, and octagons.
	Start with a piece of glass a couple of inches larger that the finished size.  Determine the length of the sides of your finished hexagon. Set Rulex™ to ‘HEXAGON’ (60°). Place the edge guide against the bottom edge of the glass piece. Slide Rulex™ to the right until you have just enough glass to make a score slightly longer than your side measurement. Score and break.  At the top edge of the glass mark off the side length, measuring to the left from the score line you just made. Rotate the glass so that the newly scored side is against the edge guide and your mark is along side the cutting arm. Adjust the position of Rulex™ for your cutter wheel offset. Score and break. Measure off your side distance along this new edge. Rotate the glass and line your mark as before. Score and break  Repeat the above step until you have completed the shape.

Trapezoids / Panel Lamps		Rulex™ makes it easy to cut or draw the body, crown and skirt shapes commonly used in panel lamp construction. Because it reverses (flips over) you can cut all the pieces for a single tier from one strip quickly and with less waste. Because Rulex™ is reversible you can also use it right or left handed or to quickly draw reverse angles.  First find the angle used for the piece in your pattern. You can measure the angle using a protractor and then set Rulex™ to that angle. You can also take the angle right off the pattern. Simply loosen your Rulex™, line it up with your pattern and then lock in place.  You need to know the either the top or base dimension. For our example the top is 1” and the base is 6”.
First cut a strip of glass equal to the height of your pieces, in our example that is 8”. Depending on the size and number of pieces needed, you may need to cut several strips to obtain the number of panels for your pattern. Place the edge guide of your set Rulex™ against the bottom edge of your strip. Slide it over to the right until you have just enough glass to make the score. Score. From this score either measure over the top dimension (1” for our example) along the top edge of the glass or the base dimension (6” for our example) along the bottom. Flip your Rulex™ over as shown. Align the arm with your mark, adjusting for your cutter wheel offset. Make this score to create panel 1. From this score line either measure over the bottom dimension along the top edge (6” for our example) or the top dimension along the bottom edge (1” for our example). This is because panel 2 is made upside-down. Flip Rulex™ back to the same position used to make the first score. Align the arm with your mark, adjust for cutter wheel offset and score. Continue repeating steps 3 through 6 until you have all the panels you need. Break all your scores to release the panels. For crown or skirt pieces that have a curved edge, cut your original strip slightly wider. Use the measurement of the straight edge to cut out the pieces and then go back and use the pattern piece to cut the curved side.
Frames and Borders  Make quick work of cutting or drawing geometric frames and borders.  Use Rulex™ to cuts strips to desired width (referring to page 1).  Use the table select the correct angle for the border or frame style you want. Place a strip against the edge guide with just enough glass showing to make your cut. Score and break. Flip Rulex™ over as shown. 5. Mark off or measure the piece length using the built in ruler on your Rulex™. Score and break. Repeat for all sides needed.		SHAPE SQUARE PENTAGON HEXAGON OCTAGON DODECAGON NO.
