SAFETY - SAFETY - SAFETY
Please, whenever you use your grinder, wear goggles that cover your full eye area. Normal safety glasses are not adequate. You need to protect against the possibility of airborne glass dust. For additional protection you can use a face shield accessory. However, the shield by itself is not adequate.
The grinder must be grounded for safe operation. Please...under no circumstances should the grounding system be overridden. Also, make sure the wall outlet you are using is properly grounded.
Let's Get Set Up An Runnin'
WHERE The best place for your grinder is a
sturdy workbench of table that can be exposed to water. The ideal table height
is about 32". It must have a level surface.
PUTTING ON THE GRINDING HEAD... Select our WB-9 or WB-1 grinder head and slide it onto the grinder motor shaft. Helpful hint: Before mounting it, we recommend the application of a motor shaft lubricant. Inland makes a Teflon based lubricant for all grinders, stock #50022. In a pinch, a light application of Vaseline cam be applied to the shaft. Lubricating the shaft seals out ground glass particles and will aid in the removal of the grinder head.
(PAGE 4)
Now take your black allen wrench and loosen the set screw. Slight turn the bit so it will slide down over the motor shaft easily. Always remember, when mounting any bits onto your motor shaft they must be mounted to the flat side of the shaft. If mounted to the the round side of the shaft, you could scar the shaft preventing removal of the bit altogether.
As
the drawing shows, set the grinding head so about 1/8" of the silver
diamond surface is above the worksurface. This is the portion you are going to
grind on first. The diamond below the worksurface cam be used later as the
diamond wears out. Note: 'Wearout' is a relative term. You will find the bead
gradually grinds slower and will need to be adjusted to expose a new section of
diamond.
FILLING THE COOLANT RESERVOIR TRAY Coolant
keeps dust from becoming airborne. It increase grinding speed and the life of
the grinding head. The reservoir is filled by removing the worksurface and
pouring water or water and a capful of Inland brand coolant into the tray to the
fill level in the center of the tray. Do not overfill causing coolant to flow
over the edges of the grinder.
The conventional way to get coolant onto the grinding head has been the sponge held into the 'bitsert' behind the grinding head. The sponge should always be kept in contact with the grinding head. If a white paste develops on the grinding head, the sponge is not in contact with the grinding head or there is not enough coolant in the reservoir. A useful alternative to the sponge system is the patented 'Invisible Sponge' system explained in the next section of this booklet. It is a standard feature on the Impulse™ and available as an accessory on the Aero™
(PAGE 5)
TEST GRIND TO GET A FEEL FOR GRINDING GLASS It is advisable to test grind a scrap of glass at this point. Make sure the sponge is touching the grinding head. Turn on the machine and start grinding using light pressure at first. Slowly increase the pressure until you feel comfortable grinding. As you grind, move the glass back and forth across the diamond head. If you need to make a deep cut in a sections, do it using intermittent pressure. This technique will allow coolant to clean the diamond head and make grinding more effective.
The Invisible Sponge™...Where'd It Go?
Impulse™ grinders are equipped with Invisible Sponge 'bitserts' for 1" and 3/4" diameter grinding heads. The Impulse™ includes a 1" diamond grinding head. When you purchase the 3/4" grinding head at a later date, remember Inland has provided you with a 3/4" 'bitsert' at time of purchase of the Impulse™. These patented 'bitserts' eliminate the need for a sponge most of the time. The Invisible Sponge system automatically pumps coolant to the grinding head. You'll like it (not just because the sponge is invisible, but) because you can grind faster and your diamond head will last longer. Then next drawing shows the 'bitserts' included or available with the Impulse™ and Aero™.

Both grinder models include standard 'bitserts' that use sponges. Impulse™ users will find it more effective to use these standard 'bitserts' with a sponge to 'use up' the very lowest part of the diamond grinding head when it is mounted on the highest useable position. This will provide the best coolant flow.
Touch
It...WOW! (The Touch Top™ Feature)
Your grinder has a three-way switch control system.
The grinder can be 'off', 'on' or 'touch top'. This drawing shows these positions
of the tree way switch on the right side of your grinder.
(PAGE 6)
When your grinder is set for 'Touch Top'™, the grinder turns on when oou put the glass and your hands on the work surface. There is a sensitivity set screw under the actuator cap that allows you to adjust the 'touch' to the feel you like best.
The unique 'touch top' feature has patents pending in the USA and other parts of the world.
Flip Your Lid
Added to the many unique features of the new Impulse™ and Aero™
grinders is the reversible worksurface. This feature gives you twice the life of
the standard grid surface.
A Bit About Bits
Diamond grinding heads are sometimes called 'bits' for short. The
diamond crystals on your grinding 'bits' are real diamond. Each diamond bit that
we manufacture is inspected under a microscope for quality before it leaves our
diamond laboratory. If you have any questions about the quality of our diamond
bits or any other Inland product, please give us a call.
By the way, Inland Craft is the world's largest maker of diamond grinding products for the stained glass industry. Inland grinding 'its' designed to fit your grinder are:
| BIT # | DESCRIPTON |
| WB-1 | 3/4" Diameter For Standard Grinding |
| WB-1F | 3/4" Diameter 'Fine Grit Bit' |
| WB-1S | 3/4" Diameter 'Speed' Grinding Bit |
| WB-1SB | 3/4" Diameter 'Superbond' Longest Life Bit |
| WB-6 | 1/4" & 3/4" Combo Grinding Bit |
| WB-8 | 1/4" Diameter For Standard Grinding |
| WB-8F | 1/4" Diameter 'Fine Grit Bit' |
| WB-8S | 1/4" Diameter 'Speed' Grinding Bit |
| WB-9 | 1" Diameter For Standard Grinding |
| WB-9F | 1" Diameter 'Fine Grit Bit' |
| WB-9S | 1" Diameter 'Speed' Grinding Bit |
| WB-9SB | 1" Diameter 'Superbond' Longest Life Bit |
| WB-18 | 9 and 18 Degree 'Lampbit' |
| WB-24 | Combo 3/4" Grinder Bit and Core Drill |
| WB-318 | 1/8" Drill Head |
| WB-314 | 1/4" Drill Head |
| WB-338 | 3/8" Drill Head |
| WB-ADP | Adaptor for WB-318, 314, 338 |
Our 1" (WB-9) and 3/4" (WB-1) grinding heads have a 5/8" vertical section of useable diamond. Most stained glass is 1/8" thick, therefore, you can adjust the diamond bit up and down the motor shaft to get 5 useable grinding surfaces from each Inland grinding bit.
(PAGE 7)
How
To Drill Glass!
The Impulse™ includes a 1/4" WB-8 bit for intricate grinding. You can drill holes
in glass with this WB-8 bit or with a WB-6, WB-318 or WB-338. To drill a hole,
hold the glass to the upper edge of the bit at about a 45° angle. Continually
dab the bit with a coolant soaked sponge while holding the glass on the edge of
the bit. As the bit begins to grind a hole, slowly move the glass (drilling on
the finished side of the glass) to a horizontal position. Continue to grind the
hole easing up on the glass just before you break through the glass. This will
reduce chipping on the back of the glass. It is advisable to use a test piece of
glass before you begin drilling on your final project. See the illustration.
Keeping
The Grinder In Tip Top Shape
Maintenance to your grinder is minimal but important. Just like any
other precision piece of equipment, maintenance prolongs life and allows for
quality performance. Actually, there isn't much that has to be done to the
grinder. The motor bearings are permanently sealed and lubricated so the motor
is self maintained.
To prevent build up of ground glass from hardening around the bit if the grinder is not used for a few days, remove the grinding bit from the grinder.
The reservoir is the part that requires the most maintenance. As ground glass hardens when it dries, it becomes difficult to remove from the reservoir. Our patent pending removable reservoir makes cleaning easy. The drawing below shows how easy the reservoir is to remove. First, remove the grinding bit and the worksurface. Remove the small white covers over the lockdown screws. Then, by simply turning the 'reservoir lock down screws' located on either side of the grinder. Remove the reservoir depositing the ground glass in the trash and rinse the reservoir tray.
