Using Diamond Tips

diamond engraver tip designsA light hand makes it easier to control the tip on the glass and prevents premature wearing of the diamond.  If it "squeals" you are pressing too hard causing the tool motor to turn against a stationary tip. It is the repeated application of the diamond tip to an area that produce shading and depth in the design. For glass, clear areas appear darker while the etched areas are lighter. On tile, ceramic, and stone the underlying color will be brought up. Use a practice piece to try the following before beginning a final project.

  1. The different tip styles to see what type of lines and shapes they create.
  2. Using the engraver and tip to draw different shapes and line types
  3. Practice writing and printing to get a feel of how the engraver feels and moves on glass.
  4. Creating shading and line patterns.
